Dassi Bikes go full carbon with Tri Box

Pleased to work with Dassi Bikes

With a few exceptions, most carbon fibre road bikes are manufactured in the Far East.  That's no bad thing and has meant the availability of high-quality and affordable carbon frames has tumbled in the past decade. The Triathlonbox team have spoken to various brands over the last year as we are very excited about British manufacturing and what we can achieve.

Dassi has been designing road bikes since 2012, but its big ambition has been to manufacture a carbon fibre frame right here in the UK. It has finally achieved that, with the official unveiling this week of its new model. We are very pleased to work with Dassi and all purchases come with £100 of any of their fantastic bikes.

There have been a few attempts at manufacturing carbon frames in the UK over the years, but none sounds quite as credible as Hampshire-based bike designers, which launched it all-new UK-made carbon bike at the London Bike Show.  What a piece of beauty it is - and working with a British made bike coompany, we are very excited in the coming months to get out on one if we can.

What really sets these bikes apart is that it's building carbon frames using moulds. Other UK-made frames made in this specialist material, like Worcestershire-based Craddock Cycles, use the tube-to-tube process.  A few years ago British brand Moda attempted to produce a carbon frame in the UK, but it's hit a few hurdles along the way and hasn't come to fruition.

Dassi Bikes was founded four years ago by ex-Rolls Royce aerospace engineer, and true inspiration to the team at triathlonbox, Stuart Abbott. Combining his own carbon fibre processing experience with expertise from Formula One racing engineers, a high-grade manufacturing facility with six full-time staff that puts quality before cost has been developed.

AdTech Ad“Here at Dassi we have aimed to innovate not just the production of the bike but the entire way a bike is brought to the end customer,” says Stuart. We have focused on build quality and says the frames are “over-engineered," compared to other bicycle carbon frame manufacturers that, according to the company, “…start with a price point, margin and cost limit and build with that.”

Unlike most carbon fibre frame manufacturing assembly processes, like Formula One teams, use carbon fibre moulds. They’re much more expensive than metal moulds, and don’t last as long, but according to Stuart, the moulds mean no post-processing of the carbon component is required. The carbon lay-up is even done by machines as well to “avoid variance through human intervention”.

It’s a beautiful looking frame. The curved top tube draws the eye into the curved seatstays. The curved down tube blends into an oversized bottom bracket, and the seat tube closely flanks the rear wheel.

The frame is made from a mix of Toray 800 and 900 carbon fibre with unidirectional used in key places. Frame weight for a 54cm is claimed to be 800g, which certainly places it towards the lighter end of the scale. There’s full internal cable routing, in keeping with the aerodynamic styling of the frame.

The frame will command a premium price tag, £3,995, with a choice of five sizes from 50 to 58cm. They’ll be selling direct with each customer getting a customised paint finish. Customers can choose a BSA or BB30 bottom bracket and it’s Di2 compatible.  The choices of frames and setups are endless and look forward to getting my hands on my very own Dassi bike in the very near future.

Triathlonbox - Getting you race ready

“Today, I'm proud to announce that we're at the pinnacle of our story so far,” says Stuart Abbot. “At this moment, Dassi is releasing its first carbon-moulded bike, fully designed and built here in Britain.”

The company hasn’t revealed exact details of the new frame ahead of the launch at the London Bike Show tomorrow but has confirmed to road.cc that it will cost in the region of £3,999. They’ll be selling direct and will be working with a handful of carefully chosen UK and European dealers.

‘Individually British’ is the tag line Dassi are launching with this week. Each customer can fully custom their frames and forks paint job. Each frame will be built to order with a detailed component consultation for each customer.

We wish Stuart an the team all the best as we have seen the hard work that goes into these beautiful pieces of bike porn.  Don't forget that all Triathlonbox purchases come with a £100 voucher off any Dassi bike.  Cannot waitto get this amazing piece of kit into the teams triathlon training.
